Research Scholarship in Phage Therapy

A postgraduate research scholarship at The University of Sydney

$140,000 scholarship for a PhD student to undertake research in phage therapy for intracellular pathogens.

Benefits

A recipient enrolled full-time will receive a stipend allowance of $40,000 per annum for up to 3.5 years.

If the recipient is approved by the Associate Dean (Research Education), Faculty of Medicine and Health to hold the scholarship on a part-time basis the stipend allowance will be 50% of the full-time rate for the equivalent full-time duration of the scholarship.

If the scholarship duration is not complete by the 20 May 2025 the scholarship will be automatically terminated.

The recipient must commence the Scholarship by the 28 February 2022. The scholarship cannot be deferred without written approval from:

  • the Associate Dean (Research Education), Faculty of Medicine and Health, and
  • NSW Health if the commencement date needs to be after the 20 May 2022.

Who’s eligible

You must:

  • be intending to apply, applied for admission, have a conditional or unconditional offer of admission or be currently enrolled full-time in a PhD with the Faculty of Medicine and Health
  • be approved by the Associate Dean (Research Education), Faculty of Medicine and Health to hold this scholarship if enrolled part-time in your degree
  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or hold a visa that allows you to live and work in Australia until 30 August 2023 or until the projected conclusion of your PhD candidature 
  • conduct a research project named, ‘Phage Therapy for Intracellular Pathogens.’
  • be supervised by Professor Jonathan Iredell in your PhD candidature
  • have completed an undergraduate degree with a credit average (or equivalent and
  • have research experience through an honours program (first class or second class, division I), or 
  • hold a master’s by research degree in a relevant subject.

Background

This scholarship is funded by New South Wales (NSW) Health and the Westmead Institute for Medical Research as part of the NSW Health Phage Therapy PhD Program.
